There are several types of irony in literature.  Three main types are verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony.

Verbal Irony: When a speaker or narrator says one thing while meaning the opposite.

Situational Irony: When a situation turns out differently than what one would expect; however, often the twist is oddly appropriate.  Also, the character involved in the event is aware that the situation was or is ironic.

Dramatic Irony: When a character or speaker says or does something that has different meanings from what he or she thinks it means, though the audience and other characters are fully aware of the speech’s or event’s ironic implications.

For example, when Romeo killed himself in Romeo and Juliet because he thought Juliet was dead when, in fact, Juliet was not dead. Romeo never knew he killed himself for no reason.
